39 still missing as Kiteezi garbage death toll rises to 34.

Thirty nine people are still missing following the Kiteezi Garbage Landfill which occurred last week on Saturday August 10, 2024.

This is according to a report by Police and Office of the Prime Minister.

“These 39 are people who were registered as missing by this committe. This includes 35 people who are community members well known residents and the four are garbage collectors who were found sorting garbage by the time of the incident”.

Kampala Metropolitan Spokes Person Patrick Onyango said.

He further revealed that 33 homes were buried under the garbage last Saturday.

Meanwhile, 120 people have been registered in the temporary shelter at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School play grounds as victims.

As of yesterday, August 14, 2024, 6 more bodies had been retrieved bringing the total number of retrieved bodies to 34.

3 year old Moses Owori, Richard Okello 31, Jane Alowo 33, 6 year old Jane Achengi and Hairati Natumya are among 5 retrieved bodies.

Kyadondo East Member of Parliament Nkunyingi Muwadde, whose constituency covers areas of Lusanja and Kiteezi told Parliament that he had repeatedly warned government of the impending disaster but government did not provide funds for decommissioning the land fill.

“In September 2011, I petitioned Parliament and government on this floor. I informed the house and government about the state and condition of the land fill, a few days later, I went to the land fill with the State Minister for Kampala. Water flowing from the land fill had washed away people’s houses. Muwadda said.

Rescue operations by the Uganda Police Force and other security agencies are still on going.
