Finally, out but not yet done. MPs granted Bail.

Member of Parliament representing Butaleja District in Bunyole East constituency Yusuf Mutembuli, Woman MP for Lwengo district Cissy Namujju and Busiki county legislator Paul Akamba have been granted bail by the Anti-Corruption Division of the High Court at a fee of sh50m each, even though the Director of Public Prosecutions had asked the Anti-Corruption Court to deny them bail due to corruption charges.
Justice Lawrence Gidudu has released the trio after determining that their failed attempt to solicit funds from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) budget did not involve physical violence or any assets requiring government recovery.
Mariam Wangadya, the chairperson of UHRC, testified at the Anti-Corruption Court about MPs soliciting a 20% bribe from the UHRC’s budget. Wangadya claimed MPs, including Mutembuli and Namujju demanded the bribe in exchange for budget support and threatened repercussions if UHRC did not comply.
Wangadya reported the attempts to President Yoweri Museveni, who advised her not to resign and promised to address the issue. Evidence, including recorded conversations, was handed over to the Criminal Investigations Directorate. However, the suspects’ lawyers challenged the use of the recordings in court.
Further hearing of the case is scheduled for August 8 and 9, this month.
