Crispus Kiyonga Installed as New Chancellor of Makerere University

Today, Crispus Kiyonga was officially installed as the Chancellor of Makerere University during a ceremony celebrating the reopening of the Makerere Main Building, also known as the Ivory Tower. The event, which marks a significant milestone for the university, took place in the presence of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and other dignitaries. Kiyonga takes over the role from Dr. Ezra Suruma, who has served in the role for over a decade.

Dr. Kiyonga, a distinguished figure in Ugandan politics and public health, has an extensive background, having previously served as Minister of Defence and Minister of Health. His academic credentials include a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Makerere University and a Master of Health Science in Population Dynamics from Johns Hopkins University.

In his inaugural address, Kiyonga emphasized his commitment to advancing the university’s mission by improving academic standards and enhancing the overall learning environment. He acknowledged the historical significance of the Ivory Tower, highlighting the need to uphold its legacy while addressing contemporary challenges in higher education.

The reopening of the Makerere Main Building, which was ravaged by fire in 2020, symbolizes a new beginning for the institution. During the ceremony, President Museveni commended the university’s resilience and reiterated the government’s support for higher education initiatives across the country.

Kiyonga’s appointment comes at a crucial time as Makerere University seeks to navigate the evolving landscape of education and remain a leading institution in Africa.
