The Ministry of Education has issued a nationwide alert to schools following confirmed Mpox cases in Uganda. Ismael Mulindwa, Director of Basic Education, urged schools to take immediate precautions, drawing lessons from previous health crises like COVID-19 and Ebola. “We need to be vigilant, especially in regions with confirmed or suspected cases. Schools must prioritize the safety of their students and staff,” Mulindwa emphasized.
The Mpox outbreak was declared on July 24, 2024, after two cases were confirmed in Kasese District. Since then, 11 cases have been reported, with no fatalities so far. Recent concerns have been heightened by a suspected case involving a 43-year-old woman in Nakasongola District. While the Ministry of Education works with the Ministry of Health to develop specific guidelines, schools have been advised to implement preventive measures.
“We recommend schools adopt the same protocols used during the COVID-19 pandemic, such as maintaining social distancing, regular hand washing, and sanitizing surfaces,” Mulindwa said.
Mulindwa also stressed the urgency of acting swiftly to avoid disruptions in the academic calendar, with national exams fast approaching. “We cannot afford a repeat of the educational disruptions we experienced during the pandemic. Immediate action is critical to ensure students can prepare for their exams safely,” he added.
Mpox spreads through close contact with infected individuals or contaminated materials, making school environments particularly vulnerable. Authorities are urging schools to remain proactive and implement the recommended safety measures.
