Recently, a high-level meeting took place in Gulu between the European Union (EU) Delegation and General Salim Saleh, the brother of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. During the discussions, the German Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. Matthias Schauer, along with other EU diplomats, expressed serious concern over threatening social media posts made by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba President Museveni\u2019s son and a prominent military figure.<\/p>\n
The diplomats highlighted that Muhoozi\u2019s online statements have often been followed by real-world repercussions, contributing to an environment of fear and intimidation. Their concerns were partly rooted in a recent incident where Muhoozi appeared to issue threats against EU envoys after they visited the offices of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) to discuss the worsening human rights situation in Uganda.<\/p>\n
In a swift and dramatic response just hours after the Gulu meeting, Ugandan authorities accused Ambassador Schauer of allegedly supporting unnamed rebel groups aiming to overthrow the government. The government further claimed that these groups were largely composed of supporters of Bobi Wine, the NUP leader.<\/p>\n
Bobi Wine strongly rejected the accusations, denouncing them as baseless and politically motivated. He characterized the claims as a diversion tactic meant to draw attention away from deeper systemic issues such as corruption, abuse of power, and ongoing human rights violations. According to Wine, fabricating threats has long been a strategy used by the regime to justify repression and silence dissent.<\/p>\n
He further noted that government critics and NUP supporters have frequently been labeled as criminals or rebels, a narrative that paves the way for arrests, torture, and enforced disappearances. Bobi Wine called on the international community to remain vigilant and not be misled by such tactics.<\/p>\n
Despite the threats and pressure, Bobi Wine reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful resistance, emphasizing that the struggle for democracy and human rights in Uganda will persist. He urged the global community to stand in solidarity with Ugandans fighting for freedom and to hold the government accountable.<\/p>\n
