Proscovia Nabbosa Mukisa, a politician aligned with the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been released on bail following her recent arrest. Mukisa, who is seeking election as the District Woman Member of Parliament for Mityana, was granted temporary freedom during a court session held on May 22.<\/p>\n
The Chief Magistrate of Mityana, Obedi Mugizi, presided over the hearing and approved her release after a brief proceeding. The court set her cash bail at Shs200,000. Additionally, she presented two sureties who each signed a non-cash bond of Shs3 million, meaning they will only pay if she fails to appear in court.<\/p>\n
Mukisa was taken into police custody on Sunday, May 18, and appeared in court for the first time on Monday, May 19. However, a decision on her bail was postponed to Wednesday, May 22. During the session, State Prosecutor Precious Ariyo told the court that the investigation into Mukisa\u2019s case was still in progress and that more time was needed to gather evidence. The judge granted the request and set the next court date for June 9, 2025.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are still gathering more evidence. The investigation is active,\u201d Ariyo told the court.<\/p>\n
Supporters of Mukisa, many of whom filled the courtroom, welcomed the news of her release with relief. Members of the NUP and community residents came out in large numbers to show their support. Upon stepping out of court, Mukisa expressed deep gratitude to her legal team, party members, and the people of Mityana.<\/p>\n
\u201cI truly appreciate all the support I\u2019ve received during this time. I feel strong, hopeful, and ready to continue working for my community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Leaders from the NUP who were present strongly criticized what they described as ongoing persecution of opposition candidates. Radio Mukooze, Mukisa\u2019s political assistant, called the situation part of a wider campaign of intimidation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is yet another attempt to silence our voices and stop NUP candidates, but we remain undeterred,\u201d Mukooze said.<\/p>\n
Mukisa\u2019s legal team said they are ready to respond to any formal charges once they are clearly presented in court.
