Mariam Wangadya, Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), has stated that she is undeterred by the sharp response issued by General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Chief of Defence Forces, following her recent appeal for the release of Eddie Mutwe\u2014bodyguard to opposition leader Bobi Wine.<\/p>\n
Wangadya had written to General Muhoozi urging the immediate release of Mutwe, stressing that all individuals, even when under arrest, are entitled to their rights. She criticized the detention as unlawful and contrary to constitutional procedures.<\/p>\n
In response, General Muhoozi issued a strongly worded rebuttal, dismissing her concerns and challenging her authority to direct military operations.<\/p>\n
Despite this, Wangadya has made it clear that such reactions will not derail her mission. She emphasized that her mandate is to safeguard the rights of all Ugandans, including those in custody.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo one is above the law,\u201d she asserted. \u201cOur responsibility is to speak out against any form of rights violations, regardless of who is involved.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wangadya also reaffirmed her commitment to her role, stating that intimidation by powerful figures will not silence her or the commission. \u201cWe will not be afraid to call out injustice. It\u2019s our duty, and we will not compromise on it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Her stance has received widespread backing from human rights advocates, who lauded her courage and underscored the importance of upholding the rights of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation.<\/p>\n
