General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the head of Uganda\u2019s army and Senior Presidential Advisor, has asked the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) to apologize. This came after UHRC Chairperson Mariam Wangadya sent him a letter asking for the release of Eddie Mutwe, the security chief for the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) party.<\/p>\n
On April 26, 2025, Wangadya wrote to Gen Muhoozi saying that Eddie Mutwe \u2014 whose real name is Edward Rogers Ssebuufu \u2014 was being held illegally. She warned that if he wasn\u2019t released, it could lead to legal action based on Uganda\u2019s Constitution.<\/p>\n
Muhoozi was angry about the letter. He posted it on his X (Twitter) account and wrote, \u201cLOL! If these people value the lives we gave them, they MUST NEVER even think of sending me such a STUPID letter again! This is their last warning! I expect an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eddie Mutwe had earlier been arrested, something Gen Muhoozi confirmed in another X post. He was later brought to court in Masaka, where he appeared weak and needed help walking into the courtroom.<\/p>\n
Mutwe was charged with robbery and aggravated robbery, related to an incident in Manja, Lwengo district. These are the same charges previously given to other NUP members like Acleo Kivumbi, Wasabi, and Gafaffi.<\/p>\n
Mutwe\u2019s lawyers told the court that he had been badly tortured while in detention. They said he was beaten, electrocuted, and tortured on his private parts up to five times a day.<\/p>\n
After the court session, Mutwe was sent to Masaka Prison. His case has caused public outcry, especially among NUP supporters, who believe the government is targeting opposition figures.<\/p>\n
