Our parents spent the rest of the year planning for this special occasion; on a daily basis, we survived on cassava with no sauce. The only indicator of the date was the unmistakable sound of Philly Bongole Lutaaya&#8217;s songs, which started airing on media outlets in early December every year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_9522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-9522\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-9522 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/smlnews.ug\/Luganda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Philly_Bongoley_Lutaaya.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/smlnews.ug\/Luganda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Philly_Bongoley_Lutaaya.jpg 311w, https:\/\/smlnews.ug\/Luganda\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Philly_Bongoley_Lutaaya-228x300.jpg 228w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 311px) 100vw, 311px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-9522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Philly Bongole Lutaaya: The Face of Christmas Songs in Uganda<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Truly, musicians hardly die; Philly Bongole Lutaaya is a living legend who resurrects every year during the Christmas season. His 1986 Christmas album remains the most popular to date, with songs like &#8220;Zuukuka,&#8221; &#8220;Merry Christmas,&#8221; &#8220;Tumusinze, &#8221; &#8220;Ssekukkulu,&#8221; and &#8220;Katujaguze&#8221; becoming ringtones, morning, afternoon, and evening songs throughout the Christmas festival. In the mid-1980s, he settled in Stockholm, Sweden, where he recorded his hit album &#8220;Born in Africa,&#8221; still widely popular in Uganda today. Philly was a talented musician who played the guitar, piano (keyboards), and drums.
