Uganda made its mark at the 16th ICAO Air Services Negotiation Event (ICAN2024) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 21 to 25, 2024. Led by UCAA’s Deputy Director General, Mrs. Olive Birungi Lumonya, the Ugandan delegation successfully negotiated and concluded several bilateral air services agreements (BASAs).<\/p>\n
The team held talks with Latvia, the United Kingdom, Qatar, Sudan, and Ethiopia, securing new agreements and reviewing existing ones. They also engaged in bilateral consultations with India, Botswana, Russia, and Malaysia, paving the way for future collaborations.<\/p>\n
One of the key highlights was the signing of the BASA between Uganda and Oman, a significant milestone in strengthening aviation ties between the two nations.<\/p>\n
Uganda’s participation in ICAN2024 demonstrates its commitment to expanding air services and promoting connectivity. As Mrs. Lumonya emphasized during the Girls in Aviation Day event, “Celebrating girls in aviation is one of those strategies that has been taken on globally as one way in which the aviation sector can see or record an increase of women in technical roles” .<\/p>\n
The Ugandan aviation sector is poised for growth, with Uganda Airlines operating in thirteen destinations and planning to expand to Harare, Lusaka, and Abuja. The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) remains dedicated to ensuring safety and security standards, having successfully completed international safety and security audits.<\/p>\n
