60 students from Ngoma Standard Secondary School in Budaka District are recovering from injuries following a serious accident along the Mbale-Tirinyi highway.<\/p>\n

The students were returning from an external school event when the vehicle they were traveling in overturned, leaving several in critical condition.<\/p>\n

The accident occurred near Nabweyo Village in Budaka Town Council and involved a blue Isuzu Elf truck, registration number UAS 317S. The truck was carrying 70 students along with five teachers.<\/p>\n

Seven students who sustained critical injuries were rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for specialised treatment, while others were taken to Budaka Health Centre IV for medical attention.<\/p>\n

Preliminary reports indicate that the truck’s brakes failed, causing it to roll backward on a steep hill and overturn. Local police revealed that the vehicle was in a dangerous mechanical condition (DMC) and was not suitable for carrying such a large number of passengers.<\/p>\n

The driver fled the scene and remains at large, as police continue their investigation. Authorities and emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene to assist the injured and transport them to nearby medical facilities. The vehicle has since been towed to Budaka Police Station for further inspection.<\/p>\n

The incident has sparked concerns over unsafe student transportation practices, particularly in overloaded and poorly maintained vehicles.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Education and Sports previously issued a ban on transporting students in lorries and prohibited travel after 8 p.m., aiming to reduce accidents and protect young lives. Despite these regulations, many schools across the country continue to violate the guidelines, with public schools often citing a lack of resources to hire safer transport options.<\/p>\n
