The Chief Executive Officer Boss land Estates, Ashley Ssendawula has advised Ugandans living in the diaspora to follow the necessary procedures before acquiring land back home.<\/p>\n
He made the remarks this afternoon, in an exclusive interview with SML News UG. \u201cFirst of all, the person abroad, sends a relative or person they trust to do due diligence on the property to ensure that all the information being given is accurate. This includes two things; one carrying out an official search from the Lands Registry to confirm whether the registered proprietor is actually the one selling to them. Secondly, they should cross check with the local authorities like LC1 and the neighbors because these always know all the people in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n
He adds that the search shouldn\u2019t only be left to the relatives only, but also \u201cThey should as well take the initiative to reach out to the lands offices through their official contacts and this information can be found on different social media channels and websites or any other alternative communication means. This helps them avoid being lied to\u201d Ashley said.<\/p>\n
Other than due diligence, they should also talk to the local authorities as well. \u201cIt is very easy these days to communicate with people via the Watsapp app being the easiest. All they need to do is get the right contacts and reach out to them. This shouldn\u2019t however be done once, they need to always check in with the authorities. If they get the opportunity to come back, they need to have good relationships with these people and the neighbors as well and ask them to keep a close watch over their property. They shouldn\u2019t leave this responsibility entirely to the relatives because as it turns, some relatives tend not to be trustworthy.\u201d Ashley added.<\/p>\n
Fencing one\u2019s land is very crucial too. \u201cIt might not be a permanent fence; you can use barbed wire in the meantime.\u201d Ashley said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Over the years, Ugandans in the diaspora have and continue to loose land to land fraudsters and land grabbers back home. Some of these are actually their family members or previously trusted relatives.<\/p>\n
In a meeting held at Parliament on 22, June 2022, Ugandans in the diaspora cried out to Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa seeking his intervention in their situation. \u201cWe have become victims because we cannot travel to Uganda so often to check on our land and people think they can make use of that opportunity to take properties from us.\u201d Henrita Wamala, the President of Uganda North America Association said.<\/p>\n
She added that, what makes matters worse is failure to get assistance from the Ministry of Lands. \u201cUnfortunately, I tried so much to get an appointment from the Ministry of Lands but I have not been successful. They have either decided not to talk to us that is why we\u2019re bringing our issues to you.\u201d ,Wamala added.<\/p>\n
