The National Environment Management Authority has implemented its warning to individuals encroaching on wetlands. Karim Ray and Eric Avunalo were detained at Luzira Prisons on July 4, 2024, subsequent to admitting guilt for breaching the conditions outlined in the Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) regulations, in the presence of the Chief Magistrate of Standards Utilities and Wildlife Court in Makindye.
\nKarim serves as the director of the Turkish Company Yaman Construction Ltd, while Avunalo manages Rockbuild Ltd. The duo was discovered engaging in the unauthorized activity of filling in the Lwajjali wetland located in Gongobe Village, Goma Division, Mukono district.
\nYamin Constructions Ltd, a manufacturing facility specializing in construction products, was officially certified to produce concrete but not to use it for backfilling in wetlands under certificate number NEMA\/EIA\/18516, in compliance with the National Environment Act No. 5 of 2019.
\nNEMA has underscored the severe consequences of backfilling wetlands, deeming it a violation of the Act.
