The Uganda Peoples\u2019 Defence Forces (UPDF) have issued a strong reminder to their troops about the importance of maintaining discipline when using social media. This message was delivered by Major Bilal Katamba, the Deputy Director of Defence Public Information, while addressing trainees of the Pre-Level III Military Police Course at Nsujju Mporwe Barracks in Mpigi District.<\/p>\n
Major Katamba stressed that UPDF members are not like ordinary civilians when it comes to public communication. He reminded the soldiers that they operate under strict military laws and must be cautious with every post they make online. \u201cAs a soldier, you are responsible for every word, every image you put out there,\u201d he warned. While social media can be a powerful tool, its misuse could damage careers, reputations, and even national security.<\/p>\n
He urged the trainees to think carefully before posting or sharing anything online. According to him, being a soldier means understanding that communication is not just about expression\u2014it\u2019s about responsibility. One careless message or misleading post can easily be misinterpreted or cause harm. He emphasized the need for professionalism, respect, and caution in all digital interactions.<\/p>\n
Major Katamba also spoke about the importance of working well with the media. He noted that if the UPDF fails to communicate its own stories, others may take control of the narrative\u2014and not always in a truthful way. \u201cThe military and the media must work together to share our story accurately. If we remain silent, someone else will speak for us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He praised the young soldiers for their dedication and encouraged them to build their communication skills. He pointed out that the UPDF\u2019s respected image, both locally and internationally, is largely due to good communication and openness with the press.<\/p>\n
As social media continues to grow in influence, the UPDF is making it clear that digital discipline is just as important as discipline in the field.
