The Electoral Commission of Uganda held a special media training at Hotel Africana to prepare journalists for the upcoming Special Interest Groups (SIGs) elections. This important event brought together reporters and editors from radio, television, newspapers, and online platforms to learn more about the legal and ethical aspects of covering these elections.<\/p>\n
The training focused on building the media\u2019s understanding of the election laws, the step-by-step process of the SIG elections, and how journalists can report responsibly and fairly. Special Interest Groups include women, youth, persons with disabilities, workers, and the elderly\u2014communities that often need more attention and fair representation in both media and politics.<\/p>\n
Facilitators from the Electoral Commission explained the rights of these groups and how the media can help amplify their voices by giving them proper coverage. Journalists were urged to avoid bias, misinformation, and sensational reporting, especially during election periods when emotions can run high. Instead, they were encouraged to provide accurate, balanced, and inclusive stories.<\/p>\n
Participants shared their experiences and asked questions about best practices when reporting on SIG elections. Many said the training gave them a better understanding of their role in supporting democracy and peaceful participation.<\/p>\n
The Electoral Commission hopes that such training sessions will improve the overall quality of election reporting in Uganda. By working closely with the media, the Commission believes it can strengthen public trust and ensure that all voters\u2014including those in Special Interest Groups\u2014are informed, respected, and represented.<\/p>\n
