The Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI) has reached a remarkable milestone, celebrating nearly 33 years of tireless efforts in promoting justice and equality in Uganda. At the organization’s 25th Annual General Meeting held on November 9, 2024, at Human Rights House in Kampala, Dr. Livingstone Sewanyana, the Executive Director of FHRI, reflected on the organization’s impressive achievements.
FHRI’s commitment to access to justice, defense of personal liberty, and abolition of the death penalty has been unwavering. The Bushenyi Legal Aid Project (F-BLAP), initiated by FHRI, has made significant strides in reducing pre-trial detention rates at Nyamushekera Prison by over 30%, providing legal aid to thousands of victims, and advocating for better criminal justice reforms in western Uganda [1).
Dr. Sewanyana emphasized, “The road to justice is long, but we have made great progress over the years. Together, we can make a difference, and the future of human rights in Uganda looks brighter with each step we take.” Recent successes include a parliamentary vote in favor of abolishing the death penalty, a reduction in death row prisoners from 417 in 2009 to 104 in 2024, and FHRI’s election as Vice President of the World Coalition against the Death Penalty (WCADP) in 2023.
The guest of honor, Stephen Okello, Secretary for National Bureau of NGOs from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, commended FHRI’s commendable work in fighting for justice. Josephine Ndagire, Chairperson of FHRI’s Board of Directors, urged organizations to learn from each other and adopt different models for development.
FHRI’s civic education and youth empowerment initiatives have established 39 human rights clubs in universities across Uganda, shaping the next generation of human rights defenders. With a dedicated team of 60 staff and 1,558 members, FHRI continues to promote human rights, supported by key partners such as the European Union, Legatum Foundation, and World Coalition against the Death Penalty.
As FHRI looks forward to celebrating 33 years, it remains committed to building on its successes, expanding its reach, and ensuring human rights remain a fundamental pillar in Uganda’s development.
