The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) has acquired two cutting-edge fire trucks, Tango 21 and Tango 22, to enhance fire safety and security at Entebbe International Airport. The 10.5 billion shillings investment ensures the airport maintains its International Fire Category 9 status, as recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) audits conducted in September 2023 and January 2024.
Enhanced Firefighting Capability
Minister of Works and Transport, Gen. Katumba Wamala, emphasized the importance of these new trucks during the commissioning ceremony this morning at Entebbe International Airport. “Whatever you will see being done here is towards improving customer comfort and safety. Every customer who goes through this airport, whether coming in or going out, must have comfort and a comfortable environment.”
The trucks’ specialized features include:
Tango 21: 12,500 liters of water and 1,500 liters of foam capacity
Tango 22: 10,500 liters of water capacity and high-reach extendable turrets for piercing aircraft bodies
Foam induction system drawing directly from drums
Greater performance capability, reaching up to 100 meters
Compliance with International Standards
Gen. Katumba highlighted the need for compliance with international airport standards. “After the audit, we’re expected to implement collective action plans. As we comply, we increase our compliance as international players in the airline industry.”
UCAA’s actions are monitored by ICAO through their portal.
Training and Capacity Building
Seventy-two Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting staff underwent comprehensive training to operate and maintain the new trucks. Director General Fred K. Bamwesigye noted, “As the industry grows with advances in technology, firefighting and rescue operations become more complicated. We need to train and equip personnel with knowledge and skills to match emerging technologies.”
Airport Upgrade Progress
The Entebbe International Airport upgrade and expansion project has reached 94% completion, with the new terminal building at 74% and expected to be finished by year-end.
With these state-of-the-art trucks and enhanced training, UCAA reaffirms its commitment to safety, security, and compliance with international standards, solidifying Entebbe International Airport’s position as a regional hub.
