UHRC calls for strict adherence to SOPs

The Uganda Human Rights Commision(UHRC) has called for strict adherence to the Standard Operating Procedures set by the ministry of health in a move to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Dr. Patricia Achan on behalf of UHRC chairperson while addressing a press conference in Kampala said more than ever before, every citizen has a critical role to play in curbing the spread of the virus by strictly fulfilling their constitutional duties.

She says the fight against Covid-19 pandemic is a converted effort by everyone in Uganda, where by strictly adhering to the SOPs, citizens will not only protect themselves but also those around them.

“in doing so, citizens will be fulfilling their constitutional duty to respect the rights of others and to cooperate with lawful agencies in the maintenance of law and order,” she said.

Achan says the commission has noted the failure to observe sops as set by the health ministry, which requires urgent attention.

“Despite available information from scientists that the Covid-19 virus spreads fast in gatherings or crowds, members of the public are disregarding social distancing yet large crowds are feared to be super spreaders,” she said.

Achan said there are reports that boda bodas especially in up country are flouting guidlenes by carrying two Passengers instead of one.

She says the general public needs to observe the presidential guidelines, security agencies are urged to strictly enforce them to the level of issuing express-penalty tickets to violators where applicable.

She reminded security forces to observe and respect human rights and freedoms In the performance of their functions as provided for under article 221 of the Constitution of Uganda

She added, “the commission therefore appeals to every citizen to fulfill their constitutional duties and contribute to the fight against Covid-19.”

Achan further called for speedy procurement of vaccines to enable mass vaccination of the population.
